This collection focuses on the FranklinTil theme make and remake. Upcycling processes were adopted to reuse imperfect old garments and create slow fashion designs. The project was visually inspired by glaciers and took into account environmental aspects such as reducing waste and recycling. The garments will act as a conversation starter over the environmental impact of melting glaciers. Throughout the project there has been research into brands who use sustainable practices such as Urban Outfitters, Antiforms and 1/off Paris. I used my own sustainable design methods by reusing textile waste sourced from my own and family's wardrobe. Ensuring that the majority of materials used are natural was of upmost importance, as it will reduce the end-of-life environmental impact. All yarns were either my own waste yarn or dead-stock yarns. The collection promotes sustainable practice and the designs have been targeted on the gen z age range. The designs are tailored to young people around me aged 16-23 who I see often and can give me feedback. The garments are contemporary and unique to everyone. As they are made using discarded materials the colours and patterns will vary. The whole collection is meant to extend textile life to encourage zero waste as all materials were reused. The project expects to be cost effective and reduce waste in the fashion and textile industry.
