This project is based on Scottish Landscape explored through patchwork. The fabrics created for this collection are highly textural due to: different yarns - thick, thin, fluffy, coarse and toying with gauge. This collection focuses more closely to traveling through Scotland and the changing landscape. I used ripple stitch for my knit finals as it creates a lovely texture and appearance; which reflects the texture of not just the water rippling on the lochs, but also the varied colours in rolling hills. Varying the colours for each final helped to create fabrics which relate to different aspects of the land. Laura Slater had a big influence on my printing method with her abstract style and use of positive and negative space. My main struggles came from mixing pigments and making sure that I had the ratios right as sometimes I added too much translucent binder resulting in a very faint image. Another challenge was making sure the flow of work stayed consistent and didn’t drift too far away from the overall theme or direction. Everything about this project has been enjoyable from research to exploration to creating final fabrics and then putting them into a final collection.
